What is Alcoholics Anonymous?

Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) is a global fellowship of people helping one another recover from alcoholism. In AA Nicaragua, and especially in AA San Juan del Sur, people come together to share experience, strength, and hope to live alcohol-free.

There are no dues, no fees, and no formal membership. The only requirement is a desire to stop drinking. AA meetings are open, supportive, and available in both English and Spanish.

History of Alcoholics Anonymous

Founded in 1935 by Bill Wilson and Dr. Bob Smith, Alcoholics Anonymous began with two alcoholics helping each other stay sober. That spark grew into a worldwide movement.

The AA program is outlined in the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous, first published in 1939. It introduced the 12 Steps—a spiritual solution to the seemingly hopeless state of alcoholism.

Today, AA meetings San Juan del Sur follow the same format as those around the world, rooted in mutual support, spiritual growth, and daily commitment to sobriety.

Quotes from the Big Book

The Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous offers timeless guidance for those seeking recovery. Some key excerpts include:

“Rarely have we seen a person fail who has thoroughly followed our path.” – p. 58
“We are not cured of alcoholism. What we really have is a daily reprieve contingent on the maintenance of our spiritual condition.” – p. 85
“We have found much of heaven and we have been rocketed into a fourth dimension of existence of which we had not even dreamed.” – p. 25
